How does Atoa Pay Later work?

Last updated on Aug 04, 2026

Atoa Pay Later lets your customers spread the cost of a purchase over 3, 12, or 24 monthly instalments, on purchases from £500 to £10,000. Your business gets paid the full amount minus any applicable subsidy (MDR) on the next business day. Longer payment terms may be available subject to suitability.

What is Atoa Pay Later?

Atoa Pay Later is a flexible payment option you can offer customers at checkout, via a payment link, or in-person.

Instead of paying the full amount upfront, customers choose a payment plan that suits them and spread the cost over monthly instalments.

Once a customer is approved, funds are transferred to your business bank account the next business day.

Atoa Pay Later is provided by Abound.

What is the application flow for Atoa Pay Later?

Your business can send a payment link to a customer by SMS or email before, or on the day of, their appointment.

The customer simply selects Pay Later as their payment method, chooses their preferred repayment term (for example, 3 months), and completes a short application.

As part of the application, they'll be asked for some basic information, including their address, UK residency status, employment status, and annual income.

The application is securely assessed by Abound, with most decisions returned in under 10 seconds. The customer will either be approved or declined, and any next steps will be clearly displayed.

If approved, the customer will review and accept the loan agreement, provide their debit card details for the initial payment (where applicable), and complete a hard credit check before the finance agreement is finalised.

Once the application is complete, your business can view the approved transaction in the Payments section of the Atoa Dashboard. Funds are paid out on the next business day, and the payout can be tracked in the Payouts section of the dashboard.

We're also expanding Atoa Pay Later to additional payment channels soon, including card terminals, eCommerce checkouts, and other payment experiences.

What payment plans can customers choose from?

Customers can choose the one that works best for them:

  • Pay in 3 - Split into 3 equal monthly payments. The first payment is made at the point of purchase. 0% interest, £0 arrangement fee. Available from £500.

  • Pay in 12 - Spread the cost over 12 monthly payments. 22.9% APR representative, £0 arrangement fee. Available from £500.

  • 24 months - For larger purchases, customers can spread the cost over 24 months. 22.9% APR representative, £0 arrangement fee. Available from £500 up to £10,000.

In some circumstances, we may be able to offer long-term loans of up to 60 months subject to approval. Dental finance starts at £350.

How does a customer apply for Atoa Pay Later?

The application happens in-flow, so customers don't need to visit a separate site or fill in a paper form.

  • The customer selects Pay Later at checkout

  • They choose their preferred plan - Pay in 3, Pay in 12, etc.

  • They complete a short application form

  • A soft credit search is performed, and a decision is given in seconds

  • Once approved, they sign their credit agreement and the payment is confirmed

Will applying affect a customer's credit score?

The initial check is a soft credit check, so it won't affect the customer's credit score. If they proceed and take out a credit agreement, a hard credit search will then be performed which can affect your credit score.

It's worth also nothing that missed payments may impact their credit score.

How quickly does my business get paid?

Once a customer is approved and their payment is confirmed, funds are transferred to the merchant's bank account the next business day. There's no chasing, and no staged payments. You can track all Pay Later transactions via Payments and Payout pages in your Atoa Dashboard.

Which businesses can use Atoa Pay Later?

  • Veterinary practices - non-emergency surgery, diagnostics, and ongoing treatment

Am I eligible to apply for Atoa Pay Later?

My application for Atoa Pay Later has been declined, why?

We understand this may be disappointing. Applications can be declined for a number of reasons, including:

  • Affordability - Abound assess what you may be able to afford to repay each month by analysing your bank transaction data.

  • Existing financial commitments – Abound review information held by Credit Reference Agencies such as Experian and Equifax about your current credit commitments and payment history. If you believe any of this information is incorrect, please contact the relevant Credit Reference Agency or your credit provider.

  • Eligibility and lending policy – We also consider other factors, such as your residency status, the type of bank account you hold, and any previous borrowing history, in line with our lending policies.

This decision was based partly on the information Experian and Equifax hold about you. You can ask either agency for a copy of it and have anything inaccurate corrected.

Credit reference agencies used in this decision:

  • Experian Ltd, PO Box 9000, Nottingham, NG80 7WF. Telephone: 0344 481 0800.

  • Equifax Ltd, Customer Service Centre, PO Box 10036, Leicester, LE3 4FS. Telephone: 0333 321 4043.

You can still pay for your purchase another way. If you'd like to discuss your application, you can email Abound at paylater@getabound.com.

Unfortunately, we're unable to provide further details about the specific reason for this decision. As Atoa is not involved in lending decisions, our Customer Care team is unable to provide any further information or assist with queries relating to your application.

How do I cancel my credit agreement?

You have the right to withdraw from your credit agreement within 14 days of signing, under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 - you don't need to give a reason.

There's no cancellation fee; you'll only need to repay the amount borrowed plus any interest up to the repayment date. To withdraw, contact Abound directly by emailing paylater@getabound.com or by calling +442034794117.

After the 14 days, you can still repay your loan in full at any time - Abound doesn't charge early repayment fees, though interest applies up to the date you repay.

How can I update my personal details?
